After what feels like every single listener begging them to watch The Birdcage, Ethan and Mike finally watch it. The movie stars Robin Williams and Nathan Lane as a long time gay couple. Robin Williams owns “The Birdcage” which is a club Nathan Lane performs at in drag.
The tension arrives when Robin Williams’ son asks his father to not be gay when he meets his son’s fiancee’s family. Easy for Robin Williams, but for Nathan Lane, it’s a big ask.
This is a product of 1996 for sure, but at the time it was a huge win for showing happy gay couples in the movies. Even today, many gay couple protagonists face tragedy and hardship on screen and it’s rare to see one in a happy, healthy relationship. That being said, Robin Williams’ son request is downright offensive and uhhh really sucks.
